Portraits from the Golden Age of Jazz on exhibit. This amazing traveling showcase features 75 photographs by William Gottlieb illustrating the contemporary jazz scene in the 1930s and 1940s, highlighting the ‘golden age of jazz.’
Gottlieb’s images of storied artists such as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Billy Holiday have become standard representations of jazz history. The legacies of these pioneers will not only live on through the music they created, but through the photographs that Gottlieb so magnificently captured. |

JEN charter member Dave Robinson announces that his Capital Focus Jazz Band youth group, which specializes in traditional jazz and was the first musical ensemble presented at the first JEN Conference, has been invited to perform in the JazzFest at Sea in December 2012--but they need help from the JEN membership. In order to realize this dream, they must sell cruise cabins. By signing up early and mentioning the CFJB, you will get the best pricing and the band will get credit towards their quota. This year's JazzFest at Sea is a Caribbean cruise with a terrific itinerary, porting at Bonaire, Aruba, Columbia, Panama, and Jamaica. The talent lineup is stellar to say the least, and includes Dick Hyman, Banu Gibson, Allan Vache, Hal Smith, Randy Reinhart, Johnny Varro, Terry Blaine, Harry Allen, Duke Heitger, John Cocuzzi, and other stars. The performance schedule includes tributes to Bobby Hackett and Benny Goodman, as well as a special re-creation of Pete Kelly's Big Seven. The action takes place on the elegant MSC Poesia. To see the full lineup, itinerary, and prices (starting at just $1,299 per person, double occupancy), check out the JazzFest at Sea web site: www.jazzfestatsea.com. Prices do not include airfare or optional excursions, but do include all on-board meals as well as all port charges and government taxes. At press time, JazzFest at Sea was offering free cabin upgrades for early deposits. To sign up, e-mail JazzFest@CruiseCafe.com and copy jazzteacher@wap.org , and identify yourself as a participant in the CFJB's "Get 'Em On the Boat!" Campaign. Please note that only registrations from travelers who have not previously taken the JazzFest at Sea cruise will count towards the band's quota. |

Just type "Jazz Box" in the App Store search box to locate this $0.99 app. Jazz Box is a chord and scale reference for music improvisation students of all genres. The theory content alone in this app is more than worth the price, and will be helpful to novices and pros alike. The next time you need to spell, practice or view scales that can be played over a Gb Dominant 7#9 chord, or verify the pitches in an E Diminished Whole Tone scale just pullout your mobile device and launch Jazz Box. JEN is proud to announce that the Outreach Program at the 3rd Annual JEN conference reached over 4,000 Louisville school students K-12 this past January! Thanks to Diane Downs (KY), director of the Louisville Leopards for serving as the local community Outreach Coordinator and sincere thanks to all of the conference artists who participated in this worthwhile program. The following JEN Outreach artists performed clinics or informances at 13 area schools and a community center:
Here is a wonderful thank you note to share the powerful effects of these informances: "Just want to tell you that our visiting group from NAU (Ryan Holder, High Altitude) was totally awesome. It was one of the best assemblies we have ever had. It was worth every ounce of trouble just to hear the buzz in the hallways from the kids who attended the performance. I don't think we have ever had anyone they liked more. Not only were they very talented and entertaining, but they were so personable with the students. My class got to be with them a few extra minutes and I thought some of them were going to cry when they left. The selections chosen were perfect for the audience. It was a big hit when they allowed some of our students to come down and do some call and response scat singing with them! I wanted to thank you and let you to know that it made a huge impact on our school. Thanks again and please let JEN know how much we appreciate it." Deanna, Teacher The JEN Outreach program started in St. Louis at the first conference in 2010 and has been continued each year to aid in fulfilling the JEN mission of advancing education, promoting performance and developing new audiences. It was designed to assist in bringing quality jazz education/performances to schools and community locations in the area, concurrent with the annual JEN conference. |
