I am the Chair of the Jazz/Pop track conference planning committee for the 2013 MTNA National Conference.

The conference planning committee is now accepting jazz/pop session proposals for March 9 “Pedagogy Saturday.”

Things to keep in mind:
- While MTNA is working hard to expand their membership to include music teachers of all instruments, currently, only 12% of its members are non-pianists.
- Most members are private studio teachers rather than band/choral/orchestra directors though some do both and many teach group lessons.
- The majority of its members teach beginners using a "read-only" approach in their studios. Many are interested in non-classical styles but need to be encouraged in this approach to making music so practical teaching tips are more appreciated than theoretical or scholarly sessions more relevant to experienced improvisers.

The Improvising Brain is a symposium and concert event that will bring together faculty researchers, graduate students, and musicians to explore music, improvisation, and related brain processes. A collaborative effort between Georgia State University Neuroscience Institute and School of Music, the concert and symposium will feature Robert Zatorre, one of the leading neuroscientists in the field of music perception and production, and Christian Howes, an up-and-coming jazz violinist representing the improvising performer.

The symposium will explore questions related to music perception, production, and the underlying cognitive processes. Of specific interest is research concerning any aspect of improvisation. Examples include: Are note choices during improvisation and word choices during speech controlled by similar cognitive mechanisms? What is the role of subconscious procedural processes during note selection? How do the environment and the underlying musical structure affect these processes?
