Great site!

How wonderful to be a part of JEN, seeing dreams becoming reality and hearing jazz throughout the country and beyond-exciting to be a part of things! Look forward to presenting at the first JEN Conference, catching up with folks!

Jazz Artists/Clinicians

On behalf of the U.S. Army Blues, I'm very happy to have joined JEN as an individual. The Blues is planning to join as a Corporate Partner Member as soon the jazz stimulus $ reaches us :). Seriously, the band will be joining next fiscal year, assuming our bosses give us the $. We enjoyed Bruce Silva's forum last week at the National Jazz Workshop in Winchester, VA. He did an excellent job of enlightening the audience on the merits of JEN.

Thanks so much for everything you are doing (and will be doing) for jazz education and we are looking forward to working with you in future years.

Tony Nalker, Group Leader U.S. Army Blues

Dear Mary Jo & JEN team, I'm very happy to be part of the newborn network.
I've spoken about it also to my team and to the Direction of the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris.
We're ready for partnerships.
Best wishes and warm regards from Paris,
Riccardo Del Fra

MAY 10 EVENT:
CLC PRESENTS 32nd ANNUAL GUEST ARTIST CONCERT

Two nationally known soloists will be featured at the College of Lake County's 32nd Annual Guest Artist Concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 10 at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will feature Los Angeles-based trombonist Andy Martin soloing with the CLC Monday Night Jazz Ensemble and Dr. Caroline Hartig, a Michigan State University clarinet professor, soloing with the CLC Wind Ensemble. Both groups will be conducted by Dr. Michael Flack, CLC director of bands.

In addition, the two guest artists will hold a clinic and master class on Saturday, May 9 from noon to 1:30 in room P101, which is free and open to the public. Martin and Hartig will discuss music performance and the current state of the music industry.

The Wind Ensemble's program includes Salutations by Alfred Reed, Third Symphony, Op. 89 by James Barnes, Fantasia and Rondo by Carl Maria von Weber, arranged by Jack Snavely and Solo De Concours by Andre Messager, arranged by Jack Snavely.

The Monday Night Jazz Ensemble's program includes a Bill Holman arrangement of Begin The Beguine by Cole Porter and Spectrum by Bob Mintzer. Andy Martin's portion of the program features five arrangements by Tom Kubis: Alone Together by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz, I Thought About You by Jimmy Van Heusen, Caravan by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington, Black Orpheus by Louis Bonfi and Imagine What A Change Will Do by Carol Jolin.

Acclaimed as a clarinet soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, Caroline Hartig has appeared with orchestras and contemporary music ensembles in major concert halls including Carnegie Hall, where she made her solo debut in 1994.

Hartig has won numerous awards for her recordings and is widely recognized and sought after for her new-music collaborations. She is a frequent guest artist for clarinet symposiums, she presents master classes nationally and internationally and has served as a juror for competitions. She was appointed to the clarinet faculty at Michigan State University in fall 2004 after having served as professor of clarinet at Ball State University since 1992.

Trombonist Andy Martin is well known for his work as a lead player and featured soloist with virtually every big band in Los Angeles. He has long been one of L.A.'s first call trombonists for commercial recordings, television and motion pictures and live theater. His television credits include every major awards show, and his motion picture credits include the soundtracks of more than 75 major films. He teaches trombone in the Jazz Studies Program at California State University, Fullerton.

The concert will be held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake Campus. The final CLC Music Department event of the 2008-09 season will the Concert Band's spring concert, to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14.

With two full-time faculty directors and a talented array of part-time instructors, the CLC music department's reputation grows each year with both audiences and music students intending to transfer to a four-year college. During 2007-2008, the College of Lake County Music Department attracted 2,804 audience members to 11 concerts (three vocal and eight instrumental). The CLC Music department offers two music degrees plus performance opportunities available for Lake County community members.
